Stockwell Removals Health and Safety Policy
Stockwell Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors, and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and related services. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with home moves, office relocations, packing, loading, transport, and storage operations.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our main objectives are to prevent injury, protect health, and promote safe working practices across all Stockwell Removals activities. We aim to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement suitable control measures so that our work is carried out safely and efficiently in homes, business premises, and on the road.
All employees and contractors are expected to cooperate fully with this policy and to take reasonable care of their own health and safety, as well as that of others who may be affected by their work.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Stockwell Removals has overall responsibility for health and safety within the company. This includes setting standards, providing resources, and ensuring that appropriate procedures are developed, implemented, and regularly reviewed.
Management will:
• Lead by example in promoting a positive safety culture.
• Ensure that risk assessments are carried out for key tasks, including manual handling, working in customer premises, and vehicle operations.
• Provide suitable equipment, vehicles, and materials that meet relevant safety standards.
• Arrange appropriate training, instruction, and supervision to enable employees to work safely.
• Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses in order to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Stockwell Removals has a duty to work safely and to follow our health and safety procedures. Employees must:
• Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
• Use equipment, tools, and vehicles in line with training and instructions.
• Report hazards, defects, and unsafe conditions promptly to a supervisor or manager.
• Wear any personal protective equipment provided when required.
• Refrain from horseplay, negligence, or unsafe shortcuts during removals work.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Stockwell Removals conducts risk assessments to identify hazards associated with our services, including lifting and carrying items, moving large or awkward furniture, packing and unpacking, operating in confined spaces, stairs, and handling fragile goods. Risk assessments also consider driving risks, loading and unloading vehicles, parking at customer addresses, and working in varying weather conditions.
Based on these assessments, we implement safe systems of work, such as using appropriate lifting techniques, team lifting for heavy or bulky items, and using trolleys, straps, and other handling aids where reasonably practicable. Staff are trained to plan moves carefully, to keep walkways clear, and to maintain good housekeeping standards in vehicles and storage areas.
Manual Handling and Lifting
Manual handling is a central part of removals work. Stockwell Removals places strong emphasis on safe lifting practices to reduce the risk of back injury and other musculoskeletal disorders. Employees receive manual handling training that covers lifting posture, load assessment, team coordination, use of handling equipment, and recognition of personal limits.
Where a load is assessed as unsafe to lift manually, staff are instructed to seek assistance, adjust the method, use equipment, or refuse the lift if it presents an unacceptable risk.
Vehicles, Driving, and Road Safety
Our removals vehicles are maintained in a roadworthy condition and are subject to regular checks and servicing. Drivers are responsible for carrying out daily vehicle checks, reporting defects, and ensuring that loads are distributed and secured safely.
Stockwell Removals promotes safe driving behaviour, including compliance with speed limits, avoidance of mobile phone use while driving, and adherence to rest breaks to reduce fatigue. Parking and access at customer premises are assessed to minimise risk to pedestrians, property, and other road users.
Working in Customer Premises
When operating in customer homes and business premises, our staff will take care to protect people and property. This includes using protective coverings where appropriate, keeping routes clear, and avoiding trip hazards such as trailing cables or loose packing materials.
Staff will be respectful of customer environments, will not smoke or use inappropriate language on site, and will follow any additional safety rules that apply at specific locations, such as commercial buildings or shared access areas.
Training, Information, and Supervision
Stockwell Removals provides employees with initial and ongoing training that is relevant to their role and level of responsibility. This training may cover manual handling, safe vehicle operation, use of equipment, emergency procedures, and incident reporting.
New employees or those new to a specific task will receive appropriate induction and supervision until they are competent to work safely. Information on health and safety matters is communicated through briefings, toolbox talks, and internal communications.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, and near misses must be reported as soon as possible so that they can be recorded, investigated, and used to improve future safety performance. Stockwell Removals maintains accident records and takes corrective actions where needed.
Employees are briefed on emergency procedures, including fire safety, first aid arrangements, and what to do in the event of a road traffic collision. Vehicles and premises are equipped with suitable emergency equipment where required.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Stockwell Removals values the input of employees in improving health and safety. Staff are encouraged to raise concerns, suggest improvements, and share ideas for safer ways of working. Management will consult with employees on significant changes that may affect their health and safety.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in our operations, working practices, or applicable requirements. Our goal is to continually improve our health and safety performance and provide a reliable, safe removals service for all customers.
