Recycle the Unnecessary Stuff when Moving Home

Posted on 10/12/2013

Moving home to home a good excuse to have a proper spring clean as well as a chance to recycle and restore what you already own. Rather than throwing away boxes and containers, use them to move with and then pass them onto charity shops or friends of interest who may need them to. To keep the world greener and your costs down to a minimum, there are so many easy ways to recycle when it comes to removal, read on to find out how.

The originals
Packing up your television or refrigerator in their original boxes will save you time, space and money. Rather than forking out a couple of pounds in new materials, pack and tape-up larger appliances and goods in the packaging you bought them in and you’ll ease the pressure off nicely. However, of course we don’t always keep the originals. If this is the case, liaise with removals companies, shop around and see if they can help you with larger items. Use the original boxes where you can but anything left that needs packing-up, keep note and see how much these boxes will cost you. Usually, this shouldn’t be too costly but it does depend.

Hand-me-downs
Charity shops and local chain supermarkets will be more than pleased to give you their second hand boxes and supplies. Just think how many crates and larger packets they’ll be storing in their stockroom. They’ll be happy to make space for more. Speak to them for any boxes they don’t need, especially if you’ve thrown out original packaging. Crates are great for heavier items and more fragile pieces. Boxes can be taped up and any large packets can be used for softer items or miscellaneous bits and bobs.

Donate it
As well as giving you spare boxes and bags, charity shops will happily welcome any donations. If you’ve got a load of clothes, toys and books, these make perfect charitable donations and will ease off the weight for your move. Hold swap parties and jumble sales. Car boot sales are also great for making extra cash to spend on your new place. Overall, if you can’t budge it, just throw it. Large collections of tins and jars can also be donated, especially to churches, so do your bit for society and donate. Only destroy as your final resort. And always remember to recycle any tins and jars to keep the planet greener.

Wrap up
Valuables will need extra care and attention when it comes to packing up for removal. Using old newspaper and bubble wrap will ensure they don’t get damaged during the move. Try the technique of wrapping around and fastening with some sticky tape. Placing these items in a padded box or crate will give them some extra much-needed care. Make sure you’re aware of what’s valuable – labelling your goods will avoid any confusion.

Carry on
So you’ve taken four steps towards a greener move. There’s no reason not to stay green whilst living in your new property. Recycling is so vital and will make your life and the environment a more pleasant place to live. Separate glass, plastic and paper when you’re throwing used bits and pieces out and always place food waste in the green container supplied by the government. Living green isn’t just about recycling, it’s about caring for the planet too. Switching lights and electricity off when you are not using them is another way to save energy and keep our environment tip-top. Pollution and litter are also to be avoided, don’t tolerate it and don’t do it.
