Storage is annoying part of moving, as you will often sweep the problem aside as soon as you realize that you have to get it sorted. There is no larger mistake that you can make however, as failing to get such things sorted as soon as possible will result in a mad panic as you try to get it all done just before the move day. If you need storage, choose the storage facilities in your area as the initial journey will be less of a hassle. There are variables to this rule however, as you will find out below. The general keys to finding storage fall under a set of headers, them being Size, Type, Location and length, which all contribute to the overall value of the unit.
The size of your unit is obviously very important, as you need to fit everything in there! Working out how much space you need can be difficult however, as a mistake can mean you have to rent another locker last minute, which is wasteful and costly. Work out how much space you need by piling your items into the corner of a room or garage and marking out another two walls with tape. This will give you a useful but rough measurement to work with, and you will be able to make your decisions from this. be aware though, that certain items can be difficult to get through certain doors, so enquire as to the exact dimension and openings when you call to order your unit.
The type of unit is essential according to what you are storing. If your items are precious and delicate then they have no place in a converted barn, where they will be prone to rot, temperature change, rusting and pests. If you have more hardy items and are not as concerned as to their wellbeing then you may find great savings in these sorts of places, but it is rarely worth the risk that you may return to find that everything that you have stored is worthless.
The location of your unit can affect things quite drastically. Space in the city is obviously at more of a premium, so you will find that units there are considerably more expensive. Having a unit in the countryside may be much cleverer, unless you need to travel for ages to get to it quite often, in which case the savings will be greatly reduced by the costs of travel and fuel. It is generally best if you can, to have your items stored as nearby as possible, but if you are moving quite a distance then this can be difficult. Make sure you calculate exactly how much of your stuff you can fit on to the truck when you move, so that you do not waste valuable space when moving. Each example will be different, so you will have to work these things out for yourself, but keep the value of the space in mind.
The length of time that you will be using the unit for will have a great bearing on where you decide to rent. If you have a set time for use, you can often get a good price through the landlord being keen to get as much rent in advance. If you are not sure however, then the cheapest from the outset is often the best, unless that mean that your items will perish faster.
All of these things contribute to the value of the space, which is linked to the value of your items. Is the amount you are paying less or equal to how much your items are worth? If not, then it may be best to sell them on instead.
