How to Move During the Holidays

Posted on 10/12/2013

Moving house is never easy – it is a tough experience, it is stressful and demanding. Most of the moves happen in summer and early autumn as this is the most convenient time for families. However, if it is not up to you to choose the time of the move, you may end up moving during holiday season, which is not the best situation. This way you could be on the road on Christmas or spend the holidays away from your friends and relatives when you least expect it. Settling into a new home is hard and it takes weeks and even months to adjust to the new surroundings, so having to do that right before the holidays or during is quite tough. Being away from your familiar surroundings just before the holidays is difficult, so you need to make sure you know how to make the transition as smooth as possible. In order to get through the physical and the emotional distance of the move, consider the following tips.

1. Organize the move well: If you don’t want to spend Christmas or Easter on the road, make sure you hire a reputable moving company which will transport your goods within a reasonable timeframe so that you can settle in before the holidays start.

2. Keep familiar belongings around you: After the move it will be hard to unpack everything and organize the entire household in a day or two, so unpack the essentials and put some special items on the right places. Try to make the home look cozier and you will adapt to it quicker.

3. Carry on with the traditions: If your family always has a Christmas tree or you do something special for Easter or New Year’s don’t ignore the traditions just because you have moved and you’ve got plenty of work to do.

4. Invite friends over: If you haven’t moved too far, make sure you invite some relatives or friends over for the holidays or for a house warming party. You don’t have to cut communication and be miserable and lonely because you’ve changed your location. If your friends can’t make it or you live too far, try to meet new people – at work, at a sports club or a local community. There will be others who have moved recently and this is a great way to make new friends.

5. Prepare your house for the celebration: you can leave most of the unpacking for after the holidays. This includes your goods for the attic, garage, books, some clothes and other things that you don’t need right away. Don’t rush the process of unpacking especially when you need to deal with your emotions. Prepare the house for a holiday and help your children adapt to the new conditions and the location.

6. Go out: Don’t stay only at home feeling bad about the many changes. Go out and take a look at the community, the neighborhood and the entertainment the city offers. This will help you feel much better and you will see that moving right before or during the holidays has its perks too. You get to see the city in its best light and what’s better than that?

Consider these tips when you need to move house during the holiday and try to stay positive. You can have an easy move and a smooth transition as long as you stay focused and avoid frustration.
